This site has been created as a place to make available just about any digital artefact that I wish to put in the public domain, while serving no particular defined purpose. It's a general blend of my technical interests and is a continuous work in progress. As it is not a commercial endeavour in any way shape or form, you will find nothing to buy, no affiliate links, no tracking and no advertising. Any opinions stated anywhere on this site are, of course, my own and should not be treated as holy gospel - I get things wrong just as often as anybody else and some things just do not age well anyway.
My background is in electronics design and software
development, and in my multiple decade career I have been involved in sectors including
aerospace, communications, metrology and transportation. I have designed and developed
test equipment and products from small handheld instruments to mesh networked
information collection and outdoor display systems. I do try to keep somewhat up to
date on developments in the field, but I do find the industry's current, almost pathological,
obsession with juiced up autocomplete systems (Large Language Models, a.k.a. 'AI')
to be a bit baffling. Sure, they can be of some use
occasionally - but my experience is that they're nowhere near as good as the hype
suggests. They are also at least an order of magnitude underpriced if any of these things are to
survive and heaven forbid, make a profit.
To make it clear, everything on this site was written or otherwise created
by myself, a bona fide human being, without the involvement of so-called AI in the
direct process - don't ever let it loose on your code, kids! (That's a story for
another time, just one word here though: Backups!).
Some notes about the site:
As a strong advocate of the KISS principle and a
believer that overcomplication, particularly in software, is slowly strangling the technology
industry, the site itself is as straightforward and uncomplicated as I can make it.
It's largely just regular HTML/CSS with a leavening of JavaScript for navigation
purposes (the mobile hamburger menu and a couple of other things won't work without it).
There are PHP backends for message handling and download counting (some metrics are important
to me - I still don't track or profile you). The only external dependency this site
has is for the Cloudflare Turnstile implementation on the contact page. This,
unfortunately, is necessary for bot control as without it there can be up to a
couple of dozen bot generated spam messages per day. Nowadays, I just count the failures,
I don't have to read the slop any more (Google ReCaptcha, which I previously used, let
through about 1 in 20, Turnstile has so far got 'em all).
A final note about the site: If you use the DarkReader browser extension (as I do
on mobile) then you may find that the legibility of some of the titles using
gradient shading is... less than perfect. I can't do anything about it except
advise you to squint (this site is responsive and has a proper dark mode anyway, so temporarily
turning DarkReader off is an option).
Licensing:
I'll keep this short: Everything on this site is provided as-is, without warranty. You may download and use my software, articles and images for your own personal use only, redistribution is prohibited. Please contact me if you have a requirement for other use cases.
Finally...
Those images at the top of the page are of real products and real code designed and developed by myself - the banner is not a stock image (you can probably tell that I'm a fairly mediocre graphic designer)!
If you're still here after all that, thanks for reading this far, and I hope that you enjoy the rest of this site.
Regards,
